Experts’ View on Challenges and Needs for Fairness in Artificial Intelligence for Education

In recent years, there has been a stimulating discussion on how artificial intelligence (AI) can support the science and engineering of intelligent educational applications. Many studies in field are proposing actionable data mining pipelines machine-learning models driven by learning-related data. The potential these to amplify unfairness for certain categories students is however receiving increasing attention. If AI applications have positive impact education, it crucial that their design considers fairness at every step. Through anonymous surveys interviews with experts (researchers practitioners) who published research top-tier conferences last year, we conducted first expert-driven systematic investigation challenges needs addressing throughout development systems based AI. We identified common diverging views about faced technologies practice, lead community clear understanding main questions raising doubts this topic. Based findings, highlighted directions will facilitate ongoing towards fairer education.
